What is Ayahuasca?

Ayahuasca is an ancient shamanic plant medicine used for centuries by the Indians of the Amazon for healing and spiritual awakening. Many rainforest shamans simply refer to ayahuasca as 'el remedio' - the remedy. It is revered by the indigenous people as a sacred medicine and a master-teacher.

The tea is made from brewing two Amazonian plants and is a powerful visionary tool that helps to resolve psychological issues, heal mental distress and access inner strength and personal power.

Not everyone comes to this medicine with the same needs. Charles Grob MD professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at UCLA has found through his research that people using ayahuasca experienced remission without reoccurrence of their addictions, depressions, anxiety disorders and even some physical ailments.

Ayahuasca Healing Ceremonies

During our seven-day workshops there are three ayahuasca healing ceremonies. The sessions usually begin in the evening and go on throughout the night although the effects of ayahuasca usually last from between 4 and 6 hours.

Everyone’s journey with ayahuasca is totally unique and individual. The plant-teacher heightens our senses and guides us to the deepest parts of the subconscious. There with our conscious minds we are able to confront, understand and release deep-rooted emotional baggage and behavioural patterns that are holding us back in our lives and preventing us from being our authentic selves. Often the plant shows us symbolically how changes in attitudes and behaviour can negate damaging influences from our past.

Drinking the tea is a purifying experience for both the mind and body. Sometimes beneficial purging may occur which allows impurities to be released that sap the body’s energy. This deep cleansing system is a natural detoxification which restores physical vitality and harmony.

Aya-Aya offers a responsible and sacred environment to experience these traditional ceremonies. We create a supportive group atmosphere and plenty of time alone to reflect on the experiences.

The Location

The retreat centre is in the North East of Brazil in the state of Bahia. Bahia is an extraordinarily beautiful region and has 1000kms of coral-reef fringed Atlantic Coastline where dolphins leap, turtles lay there eggs and whales sometimes pass by with their babies.

The centre is between the exotic Bahian capital of Salvador and the lovely old town of Ilheus so full of character and colour. We are about seven miles from Itacare, a vibrant fishing village turned surfing town bursting with live music, capoeira, restaurants and bars of all descriptions.

The beautiful Eden-like setting of the centre is part of the Mata Atlantica, a UNESCO world heritage site, which is pure tropical perfection where totally unspoilt nature can be enjoyed.

The workshops take place in a private eco lodge only minutes away from palm fringed beaches, crystal clear waters and protected rain forests.

The Accommodation

The comfortable bungalows are surrounded by exotic tropical gardens with panoramic views of the jungle and of the beautiful lagoon. They all have balconies, hammocks, showers, mosquito nets and ceiling fans. There is also cheaper accommodation available in a spacious dormitory for five people.

There is an octagonal building where the ceremonies take place, another for eating and chilling out with a large terrace overlooking the rainforest, and a room where workshops are held.

Food

The delicious meals served during our programmes are prepared using the freshest ingredients:- locally sourced seasonal fruits, vegetables from the certified organic garden, fish straight from the sea, free-range chicken, pulses, grains and natural juice drinks. There is no alcohol served during the retreat and our diet is salt and sugar free. This special diet is specifically geared to help maximize the ayahuasca experience and has the added benefit of enhancing both your mental and physical well-being.

• Dormitory (5 people max) - £950 per person

The fee for the retreats includes all activities, workshops and meals. The plant ceremonies are free to retreat participants.
